USPS sued for more than $1 million after truck hits vehicle

An Orleans Parish resident is suing the U.S. Post Office for more than $1 million after allegedly being in a collision with a postal service truck.

Melvin Jourdan filed suit against United States Postal Service and Jerry Zeigler Sept. 9 in federal court in New Orleans.

The alleged crash occurred on Sept. 10, 2008 as Jourdan was driving his 2002 Ford vehicle east bound on Loyola Ave. According to the lawsuit, a U.S. Postal Service truck ran a red light, turned into the path of Jourdan and struck the front left side of Jourdan's vehicle.

The defendant is accused of negligence for the reckless and careless operation of his vehicle, failing to keep his vehicle under control, failing to act as a reasonable person under similar circumstances, negligently failing to see what he should have seen at the time of the crash and disregarding a red traffic light.

Jourdan is seeking more than $1 million in damages for mental pain and anguish, physical pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, lost wages, loss of earning capacity, medical expenses, property damage, punitive damages, interest and court costs.

Jourdan is represented by New Orleans attorney Randall J. Meyer. A
jury trial is requested.

U.S. District Judge Mary Vial Lemmon is assigned to the case.
