Louisiana seaman sues employer for $1.8 million

A Louisiana seaman has filed a Jones Act lawsuit against his employer seeking for more than $1.8 million over alleged back injuries.

Byron Williams filed suit against Kyle Wilson, Swiftships Shipbuilders and FJN Contractors Aug. 16 in federal court in New Orleans.

Williams claims he was injured on July 16 while he was a passenger on a Boston Whaler owned and operated by Swiftships Shipbuilders and driven by their employee. William does not detail what type of accident occurred but states the defendants are guilty of negligence in failing to provide a safe place to work and with an adequately trained crew.

Williams argues the negligence of the defendants and unseaworthiness of the vessel caused him to sustain a herniated disc, back strain, contusions and abrasions and a concussion.

Williams is seeking more than $1.8 million in damages for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, mental anguish, emotional stress and strain, loss of earning capacity, loss of enjoyment of life, maintenance and cure and interest.

The plaintiff is represented by Darleen M. Jacobs of New Orleans and Alicia Johnson Butler of New Iberia.

U.S. District Judge Stanwood R. Duval, Jr. is assigned to the case.
