A dozen cases related to deaths following Hurricane Katrina at a Mid-City hospital have already begun consolidating and a class certification date has been set in Orleans Parish Civil District Court.
Tenet Mid-City Medical LLC, which operates the Lindy Boggs Medical Center in New Orleans, is being sued for alleged negligence and medical malpractice in the days surrounding Katrina in 2005.
New Orleans resident Napoleon Dunn is acting as lead plaintiff. The suits allege that the hospital did not do enough to prepare and protect its patients and that doctors acted negligently when power failed at the hospital for three days after the storm.
A case management order signed on June 9 lists New Orleans attorneys Anthony Irpino and Joseph Bruno as the plaintiff steering committee.
New Orleans attorneys Peter Sperling and Bruce Conner are lead defense attorneys in this case.
Orleans Parish Judge Piper Griffin is overseeing this case. A class certification hearing has been set for Oct. 25.
The procedural history shows that many of the cases are still under review by a medical board, as per Louisiana malpractice law. A hearing for a defense motion for exception of prematurity set for Friday was continued pending the findings of a medical review board.
