A registered nurse for the Tulane Community Health Center has filed a discrimination lawsuit against that argues he was subjected to race and gender discrimination.
Alleging violations of his civil rights, Ronald Ruffin filed suit against Tulane University on Dec. 17 in federal court in New Orleans.
Ruffin, an African American male, was employed by Tulane University as a registered nurse at the Tulane Community Health Center. He argues that he was harassed by his former supervisor through denial of workers' compensation benefits and inequality regarding work assignments. Ruffin complained to the defendant's personnel department and filed a charge of discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in June 2008. He was terminated from his employment in September 2008.
He accuses the defendant of unlawful discrimination based on his race and gender. The defendant also is accused of retaliating against Ruffin based on his opposition to the alleged discriminatory practices and subjected Ruffin to a hostile work environment.
The plaintiff is seeking damages for lost pay, compensatory damages, punitive damages and attorney's fees.
Ruffin is represented by Waite P. Stuhl in St. Louis. A jury trial is requested.
U.S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt is assigned to the case.
