U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier issued an order this week allowing the United States to dispose of certain expired samples that were collected from the Gulf of Mexico last year.
The order comes after a BP motion to throw away certain water and oil samples taken from the Gulf of Mexico which the oil company said had expired and were costing large sums of money to maintain in refrigerated warehouses.
The United States Join Investigative Team oversaw the handling of the samples, which BP paid to have collected and stored.
Barbier's ruling came with a list of approximately 1,200 sediment, water and other samples collected by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Environmental Protection Agency between May and October 2010.
The order was issued April 7 in the Federal District Court of the Eastern District of Louisiana.
