Louisiana plantation sued after Californian woman trips and breaks ankles

A California woman has filed a lawsuit against a Louisiana plantation after she tripped and fell, breaking both her ankles.

Darla Dhillon filed suit against Oak Alley Plantation and Catlin Specialty Insurance Co. on Dec. 14 in federal court in New Orleans.

The alleged incident occurred on April 17, as Dhillon and her friends visited the Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, the suit claims. She states she was walking from the entrance of the plantation house to the front of the house to view the name-sake alley of oak trees. As she walked straight out toward the trees, she lost her balance due to a difference in height between the veranda and the surrounding ground, the suit claims.

The defendants are accused of failing to maintain their property in a safe condition, failing to ensure that its property was safe and free form defects, failure to remedy a known defective and unsafe condition of its property, and failing to provide adequate warning of the dangerous and unsafe condition of its property.

The plaintiff is seeking damages for physical pain and suffering, mental anguish and suffering, medical expenses, loss of enjoyment of life, court costs, expenses, interest and attorney's fees.

Dhillon is represented Maria I. O'Byrne Stephenson and Kathleen D. Lambert of Stephenson, Chavarri & Lambert in New Orleans. A jury trial is requested.
