Disabled woman suing Harrah's after being thrown from scooter

NEW ORLEANS - A disabled New Orleans woman is suing a local casino for a malfunctioning elevator she claims resulted in her being thrown from her mobility scooter.

Nona Norris filed suit on Jan. 3 in Orleans Parish Civil District Court against Jazz Casino Company, Harrah's Casino, Schindler Elevator Corporation and subsequent insurers.

The complaint claims Norris pulled headfirst into an elevator with her mobility scooter and the casino's elevators malfunctioned leaving her stuck between floors. The filing says when the doors opened at the next floor she backed up and fell off of the scooter. The plaintiff claims she hit her head and received a large bruise that required emergency assistance and ongoing medical treatment.

The plaintiff is asking for an unspecified amount in damages for mental pain and anguish, physical pain and suffering and loss of function, medical expenses and loss of enjoyment of life.

She is suing the elevator company for failing to upkeep the site as well as the casino owners for employing a reckless company.

Norris is being represented by Michael J. Begoun of New Orleans-based Wolfe, Begoun and Pick.

The case has been assigned to Division M Judge Paulette R. Irons.
