Mother sues school after daughter allegedly receives 10 times more than proper dose of insulin

DONALDSONVILLE -- An Ascension Parish woman is suing the local school board claiming an employee gave her daughter too much insulin.

Latoya Turner filed suit on March 5 in the 23rd Judicial District against the Ascension Parish School Board.

Turner claims her daughter was a student at one of the defendant's schools when a school nurse administered too much insulin to her. The plaintiff's daughter was supposed to receive three units of insulin for her type I, but the plaintiff alleges the school nurse gave her 30 units instead.

After receiving the dose the plaintiff claims her daughter had to evacuated by an emergency vehicle to a local hospital where she stayed overnight until she was stabilized. The plaintiff also alleges her daughter had to return to the emergency room two subsequent times following the incident due to fluctuations in her glucose levels that were unseen before the alleged mishap.

An unspecified amount in damages is being sought for pain and suffering, future disability, illness, impairment, mental anguish, fear, emotional distress and medical expenses.

Turner is being represented by S. Layne Bar of Baton Rouge-based Moore, Thompson and Lee APLC.

The case has been assigned to Division D Judge John L. Peytavin.
