Martial arts instructor sued for injuries student claims occurred in class

NEW ORLEANS – A New Orleans woman is suing her former martial arts instructor for injuries she claims occurred in class.

Shana Treichel filed suit on against Street Smarts Krav Maga and Mathew M. Totaro in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court.

Treichel claims when she was a student of Torataro's at Street Smarts Krav Maga he flubbed a takedown when using her in a demonstration that resulted in her being flipped over the mats in the gym and onto the hard gym floor.

The plaintiff alleges she was injured in the demonstration. Treichel asserts Totaro was negligent in the takedown, performed the maneuver without properly training Treichel and performed the maneuver with excessive force.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, mental anguish, emotional distress, disability and loss of enjoyment of life.

Treichel is being represented by Meatirie-bassed Edward P. Gothard of Nowalsky, Bronston & Gothard.

The case has been assigned to Division M Judge Paulette R. Irons.
