Newly baptized man sues church after slipping down wet stairs

NEW ORLEANS - A Mississippi man has filed a lawsuit against a St. Tammany Parish church after he slipped down wet stairs following his baptism.

Michael C. Buck filed suit against Pearl Hickory Baptist Church and Church Mutual Insurance Co. on May 22 in federal court in New Orleans.

The alleged incident occurred on May 22, 2011 after Buck was baptized at defendant's facility located on Willis O'Berry Road in Pearl River.

He states broke several toes and suffered other injuries.

The defendant is accused of failing to maintain the stairs in question in a safe, dry, non-skid condition, failing to take reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of the guests who would use the stairs, for maintaining the stairs in unreasonably dangerous conditions that presented unreasonable hazards, and for allowing guests to use the stairs that were dangerously designed, constructed, installed and/or illuminated.

The plaintiff is asking the court for an award of $100,000 in damages for pain and suffering, mental anguish, distress, loss of enjoyment of life, medical expenses, loss of earnings or income earning capacity, interest, court costs, and attorney's fees.

Buck is represented by Baton Rouge attorney Charles S. Lambert Jr.

U.S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon is assigned to the case.
