Doctor sued for allegedly leaving foreign object in surgery patient

Patricia S. Leblanc

GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish woman has sued a doctor and hospital alleging she received improper care during surgery.

Claudia Garcia filed suit against Ochsner Medical Center-Westbank LLC and Dr. Jennifer L. Ohmann-Bigelow in the 24th Judicial District Court on June 25. Garcia claims she underwent laparoscopic surgery on her pelvis conducted by Ohmann-Bigelow at Ochsner Medical Center-Westbank LLC.

Garcia alleges that the defendant left a metal strip in her pelvis during the procedure, which went undetected by Dr. Ohmann-Bigelow until after the patient had been released from care. Garcia asserts that her pain level increased following the surgery and that she was unable to return to high school, which delayed her graduation. The plaintiff claims she was unable to attend the first semester of her senior year of high school, which resulted in emotional harm and her inability to seek full-time employment.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, mental anguish, medical expenses and lost wages.

Garcia is represented by Patricia S. Leblanc of Metairie-based Leblanc Butler LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division O Judge Ross P. LaDart.

Case no. 716-343.
