Shipbilder named in asbestos suit
Neil F. Nazareth
NEW ORLEANS – A Tangipahoa Parish woman is suing a shipbuilder for the wrongful death of her husband.
Joyce Bealer on behalf of Ellis Belaer, Jr. filed suit against Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Inc. et al in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court on July 6.
Bealer claims her husband learned he had asbestos-related lung cancer in August 2011 and that he died in December of 2011. The plaintiff alleges that her husband's father worked in the Avondale shipyard in the 1940s, '50s and '60s and exposed the deceased to asbestos by bringing home asbestos fibers from work. Bealer also claims her husband was exposed to asbestos as a sales clerk and salesman at MISCO Supply Company.
The defendants are accused of negligently allowing the exposure of asbestos.
An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, disability, mental pain and suffering, loss of economic benefits, loss of enjoyment of life and wrongful death.
Bealer is represented by Neil F. Nazareth of New Orleans-based Martzell & Bickford.
The case has been assigned to Division A Judge Tiffany G. Chase.
Case no. 2012-06620.
