Hip replacement surgery suit filed by man claiming his leg was shortened

GRETNA – A Metairie doctor has been sued by a man claiming his hip replacement was not performed correctly.

Derrel Ranatza filed suit against Dr. Daniel Gallagher, M.D. in the 24th Judicial District on July 13.

Ranatza claims he underwent surgery conducted by Gallagher for a complete right hip replacement in February 2008. The plaintiff alleges that the hip replacement was inserted too deeply, shortening his leg as a result. Ranatza asserts that Gallagher did not report that he had provided improper treatment and was told his leg would return to normal length as the muscles and ligaments stretched. Upon a second opinion by another doctor the plaintiff was told the surgery had been botched and that the leg would not grow longer, the suit claims.

The defendant is accused of failing to properly perform the hip replacement, placing portions of the hip replacement too deep, failing to inform of the botched surgery, failing to follow proper procedures, telling the plaintiff the leg would grow longer and general negligence.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for pain and suffering, medical expenses, disability, disfigurement and lost wages.

Ranatza is represented by Darryl J. Becnel of the Reserve-based Becnel Law Firm.

The case has been assigned to Division O Judge Ross P. LaDart.

Case no. 717-046.
