Jefferson Parish sues barge company for allegedly running crane into Lapalco bridge

GRETNA – The Jefferson Parish government has sued a shipping company for allegedly running into a local bridge.

The Parish of Jefferson filed suit against Blanchard Contractors, Inc., Blanchard Offshore Boats, Blanchard Marine Rentals, LLC, Blanchard Marine Service and their insurers in the 24th Judicial District Court on Aug. 1.

Jefferson Parish claims a Blanchard tug boat was pushing a barge carrying a crane on the Harvey Canal on April 6, 2012, and the crane struck the Lapalco Bridge. The plaintiff alleges the incident resulted in severe damage.

The defendant is accused of being liable for all damages to the bridge.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for repair, expenses, legal interest and attorney's fees.

Jefferson Parish is represented by Assistant Parish Attorney W. Reed Smith with the Jefferson Parish Attorney's Office.

The case has been assigned to Division D Judge Robert M. Murphy.
