Jefferson Parish Hospital sued over staph infection death

Michael T. Beckers

GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish family have filed suit against a local hospital for the death of their husband and father.

Lois B. Wilson, Shari W. Sandoz and Pamla W. Snoddy filed suit against Jefferson Parish Hospital Service District No. 2, Parish of Jefferson, State of Louisiana, East Jefferson General Hospital Foundation and Franklin J. Mote, M.D. in the 24th Judicial District Court on Aug. 6.

The plaintiffs claim the deceased, Jerry H. Wilson, was an in-patient under the care of the defendants for exploratory surgery and removal of certain parts of his internal organs including parts of his digestive system. The plaintiff alleges that a pharmaceutical Scopolamine patch was placed behind Wilson's ear during the procedure and forgotten about until a doctor later saw it following the procedure and removed it. Jerry Wilson is alleged to have had an adverse reaction to the medication and became disoriented, severely confused, had hallucinations, exhibited paranoia, entered a psychotic state, suffered severe debility and was unable to feed himself or eat.

The plaintiffs claim due to the after-effects of the patch Terry Wilson had to have a feeding tube inserted. Following insertion of the tube the plaintiffs assert their husband and father received a severe and potentially deadly infection that caused his temperature to spike and also resulted in vomiting. Shortly afterward blood poisoning was also allegedly noted.

The plaintiffs also allege that antibiotic treatment for the infection was discontinued too soon and then by the time it was restarted the infection had moved to Trry Wilson's heart which resulted in his eventual death.

The defendant is accused of medical malpractice resulting in wrongful death.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, mental pain and suffering, medical expenses, loss of past earnings, loss of earning capacity, temporary and permanent disability, death, loss of consortium, mental anguish, grief, loss of companionship, loss of opportunity for survival, mental and emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life and funeral expenses.

The plaintiffs are represented by Baton Rouge-based attorney-Michael T. Beckers.

The case has been assigned to Division C Judge June Berry Darensburg.

Case no. 717-823.
