Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office sues over failure of fire suppression system

Gregory O. Currier

GRETNA – The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is suing numerous contractors after the alleged failure of an office sprinkler system resulted in serious damage to a Sheriff's Office building during a fire.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand, Jefferson Parish Law Enforcement District, Princeton Excess, Certain Underwriters and Lloyd's of London, Princeton Excess and Surplus Lines Insurance Company and QBE Specialty Insurance Company filed suit against Sotec LLC, Siemens Corporation, Tyco International Ltd., Worlmand Fire Systems, Inc., Ansul Coporation, Simplexgrinnell LP and Starr Surplus Line Insurance Company in the 24th Judicial District Court on Aug. 8.

The plaintiffs claim that when an office fire broke out at the Sheriff's Office located at 1233 Westbank Expressway in Harvey the fire suppression system failed to operate correctly and the building suffered severe damage. Due to the alleged failure of the fire suppression system dry chemicals and other materials had to be used to put out the fire which caused further damage to the building, its contents and interior.

The defendants are accused of failing to prevent fire and smoke damage to the interior and exterior of the building, damage to sensitive computer equipment, damage to the buildings contents and for causing the plaintiffs increased payroll expense to maintain a fire watch 24 hours a day in the building.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for damage to the building.

The plaintiffs are represented by Gregory O. Currier of Adams, Hoefer, Holwadel & Elridge, LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division K Judge Ellen S. Kovach.

Case no. 717-973.
