Family of man who allegedly choked to death on dentures sues Ochsner Medical Center

NEW ORLEANS – The family of a deceased patient is suing a local medical facility claiming wrongful death.

Nahid Kased, wife of the deceased Mahmud Kased, and their children Nabil Kased, Naheed Kased and Buthaina Kased filed a lawsuit against Ochsner Medical Center Kenner, LLC, Susheela Viswanathan M.D. and Georgia Klingman in the Orleans Parish Central District Court on Aug 7.

The Kased family claims that the defendants alleged negligence and violation of the appropriate standard of care led to the wrongful death of Kased. The plaintiffs claim the defendants failed to remove Kased's dentures prior to major surgery and that the dentures allegedly became lodged and blocked his airway, which ultimately led to his passing.

An unspecified amount is sought for all damages, including the loss of the love, affection, and support of the decedent, pain and suffering the decedent endured prior to his passing and medical expenses incurred during his treatment at Ochsner.

The plaintiffs are represented by Mark W. Smith of Metairie-based Mark W. Smith & Associates, PLC.

The case has been assigned to Division A Judge Tiffany G. Chase.

Case no. 2012-07739.
