School board and school sued over student's injuries from alleged attack

Dufrocq Elementary School

BATON ROUGE – A Baton Rouge woman is suing her daughter's school, the school board and the city after her daughter was allegedly injured at school.

Shameka Brown, on behalf of her minor child, filed suit against Dufrocq Elementary School, the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board and the City of Baton Rouge in the 19th Judicial Court on Nov. 5.

The plaintiff claims that her daughter's face was injured in an alleged attack by another student at Dufrocq Elementary on Nov. 3, 2011. The injuries allegedly occurred after another child hit the plaintiff's daughter in the face during recess, which resulted in a scar under her right eye and bruising on her face. Brown asserts she was not informed of the injuries until her child came home from school that afternoon.

The defendants are accused of failing to supervise the children adequately, failing to notify the minor child's parent/guardian of the injury and failing to provide adequate medical attention to the minor child.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, mental anguish, loss of consortium, medical expenses, fear, distress and anxiety.

Brown is represented by Baton Rouge-based attorney Sonceree Smith Clark.

The case has been assigned to Division M Judge Kay Bates.

Case no. 616776.
