NEW ORLEANS - A field helper has filed a Jones Act lawsuit seeking $1.25 million claiming he injured his back by lifting a heavy weight bar.

Frederick A. Brumfield filed suit against Knight Oil Tools on Nov. 29 in federal court in New Orleans.

The incident occurred on Aug. 23, 2012 as Brumfield, a field helper on the vessel the Miss Ann was ordered to pick up a heavy weight bar and injured his back. Brumfield states that he was not properly trained to pick up the bar and was not provided any assistance to complete the task.

The plaintiff is asking for an award of $1.25 million in damages for physical and mental pain and suffering, physical scarring, disability, loss of wage earning capacity, found and fringe benefits, maintenance and cure, attorneys’ fees, court costs, and interest.

Brumfield is represented by Paul M. Sterbcow and Beth E. Abramson of Lewis, Kullman, Sterbcow & Abramson in New Orleans.

U.S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier is assigned to the case.
