GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish woman is suing a local outlet of an international retailer for injuries she claims to have received when a gate allegedly fell on her head.

Corane McCraney filed suit against Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in the 24th Judicial District Court on Jan. 18.

McCraney claims she was at the Wal-Mart located on Veterans Boulevard in Metairie and was walking into the store through a raised gate entrance. According to the suit, the gate suddenly came crashing down on her head. The plaintiff alleges she received injuries to her entire body in the incident including to her head, neck and back.

The defendant is accused of failing to warn the plaintiff of a dangerous condition when an employee dropped the gate on her head, failing to maintain a safe and clear entrance to the store, negligently creating a hazardous condition for customers, failing to provide customers with a reasonably safe place to shop, negligently lowering the gate causing it to strike the plaintiff’s head, failing to keep a proper look-out for customers entering the premises, failing to adequately warn customers the gate was being lowered and failing to maintain a safe means of entering and exiting the store.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, mental pain and suffering, medical expenses, permanent residual disability and loss of earning capacity.

McCraney is represented by attorney Salvador F. Gutierrez Jr. of Chalmette.

The case has been assigned to Division H Judge Glenn B. Ansardi.
