City of Gretna sued by woman who claims she was injured after stepping in hole on sidewalk

GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish woman is suing the City of Gretna and Jefferson Parish after she was allegedly injured when she stepped in a hole created by the removal of a parking meter.

Darlene Schexnayder filed suit against Jefferson Parish, City of Gretna and their insurers in the 24th Judicial District Court on May 29.

Schexnayder claims that on May 29, 2012 she was walking in front of the 2nd Parish Court building when she stepped in a hole created by the removal of a parking meter and fell onto the concrete and injured her knee. The plaintiff alleges that she was severely injured in the fall and required surgery.

The defendant is accused of failing to maintain a safe environment for pedestrians, failing to exercise reasonable care and failing to make a reasonable effort to keep the premises free of hazards.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for failing to maintain a safe environment for pedestrians, failing to exercise reasonable care to ensure its property was in reasonably safe condition and failing to make a reasonable effort to keep the premises free of hazards.

Schexnayder is represented by Mark P. Glago of New Orleans-based Glago Law Firm LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division J Judge Stephen C. Grefer.
