GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy is being sued for allegedly causing a car accident while on duty.
Mary and Joseph Palmer filed suit against Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand and Deputy Nicholas Sanderson in the 24th Judicial District Court on June 26.
The Palmers claim that Sanderson was driving a Sheriff’s Office cruiser northbound on LA Hwy. 18 when he ran a red light and crashed into their car. The plaintiffs allege that they received severe injuries in the accident.
The defendant is accused of disregarding a red light, entering into an intersection at an excessive rate of speed, failing to see what should have been seen and careless operation of a motor vehicle.
An unspecified amount in damages is sought for bodily injuries, mental pain and suffering, physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, medical bills, pharmaceutical bills, increased susceptibility to future illness and disease and loss of consortium.
The plaintiffs are represented by attorney J. Price McNamara of Baton Rouge.
The case has been assigned to Division D Judge Scott U. Schlegel.
