Tow boat operator suing Jefferson Parish after vessel hits closed drawbridge

Popp

GRETNA – A local tug boat operator is suing Jefferson Parish claiming that one of the tow boats it was towing ran into a drawbridge after the bridge operator allegedly told them to come through without first lifting the bridge.

Crosby Tugs LLC filed suit against the Parish of Jefferson in the 24th Judicial District Court on July 1.

Crosby Tugs claims that one of its boats was towing another boat northbound on the Harvey Canal on July 9, 2012 when itcollided with the Lapalco Bridge. The plaintiff claims that it knew the bridge’s clearance was 50 feet so called ahead to the bridge operator who subsequently flashed a spotlight in the vessel's direction to signal that the bridge was raised. Crosby Tugs asserts that when its boat approached the bridge the mast of the boat it was towing struck the unopened bridge causing damage to the vessel.

The defendant is accused of negligence.

An unspecified amount is sought by the plaintiff for all damages incurred in the incident.

Crosby Tugs is represented by Matthew F. Popp of New Orleans-based Emmett, Cobb, Waits & Henning.

The case has been assigned to Division F Judge Michael P. Mentz.

Case no. 728-511.
