Deckhand seeks $5 million after slipping and falling in the engine room

NEW ORLEANS - A deckhand has filed a $5 million lawsuit against his employer claiming he suffered injuries when he slipped and fell in an engine room.

Carlos Parker filed suit against Abdon Callais Offshore on Aug. 21 in federal court in New Orleans.

The alleged incident occurred as Parker was working as a deckhand for the defendant and assigned to the M/V Callais Provider. Parker slipped and fell when an “unsecured or improperly secured” deck plate slid as he stepped on it, the suit claims.

Parker allegedly injured his head, neck, back and knee.

The plaintiff is seeking an award of $5 million in damages for medical expenses, physical pain and suffering, mental and emotional pain and suffering, loss of wages and loss of earning capacity, loss of enjoyment of life, loss of economic horizons, punitive damage, attorney’s fees, interest, and maintenance and cure.

Parker is represented by Evette E. Ungar, George W. Byrne, Jr. and Cheryl L. Wild of Ungar & Byrne in New Orleans.

U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown is assigned to the case.
