GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish woman is suing a corporate discount retailer for permanent disability after she allegedly tripped over a crate that was obscured beneath a clothing rack.

Denise Reid filed suit against Family Dollar Stores of Louisiana Inc. in the 24th Judicial District Court on Sept. 25.

Reid claims that on Oct. 20, 2012 she was walking in the Family Dollar store located at 3615 Jefferson Highway in the Azalea Gardens Shopping Center in Jefferson when she tripped over a crate that was placed beneath a clothes rack and fell to the floor. The plaintiff alleges she fell violently to the ground and suffered severe and disabling injuries. Reid asserts the crate was not visible when she tripped over it.

The defendant is accused of failing to maintain a reasonably safe place for visitors, failing to take necessary measures to protect the safety of visitors, failing to properly maintain and inspect the premises, failing to warn visitors and works of the dangerous nature of the premises and failing to take such steps to avoid the incident.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, mental pain and suffering, medical expenses, loss of earnings, permanent disability, loss of consortium, loss of enjoyment of life, penalties and attorney’s fees.

Reid is represented by Guy S. Parks of New Orleans-based Edward J. Womac Jr. & Associates.

The case has been assigned to Division I Judge Nancy A. Miller.

Case no. 731-377.
