Heart surgery patient suing after air bubble in IV allegedly caused cardiac failure

Malpractice

GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish woman is suing a number of local medical professionals who were responsible for her IV when an air bubble was allegedly introduced into her bloodstream and caused cardiac failure.

Josephine Walker, and husband Edmond, filed suit against Parish Anesthesia of Gretna LLC, Jeffrey Borchardt M.D., Hassenboehler C.R.N.A. and LAMMICO Insurance Agency Inc. in the 24th Judicial District Court on Nov. 22.

Walker alleges that on May 12, 2010 she was recovering from a successful heart operation at Ochsner Medical Center when an air bubble entered her blood stream through an IV. The plaintiff asserts that the air bubble caused cardiovascular collapse and she had to be revived by attending physicians.

The defendant is accused of failing to meet the applicable standard of care and failing to properly supervise.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for medical expenses, pain and suffering, mental anguish, distress, loss of social functions and loss of ability.

Walker is represented by attorney Shannon L. Batiste of Port Allen.

The case has been assigned to Division N Judge Stephen D. Enright Jr.

Case no. 733-214.
