GRETNA – A Westwego area non-profit housing foundation is being sued after one of its tenants was allegedly injured when her ceiling fell on her.

Carlette Ellis and Shelita Thompson filed suit against Jefferson Housing Foundation, Beechgrove Redevelopment LLC and Beechgrove Redevlopment Phase II LLC in the 24th Judicial District Court on March 6.

Thompson and Ellis alleges that at 5:30 a.m. on April 14, 2013 they were in a bedroom in an apartment building owned by Jefferson Housing Foundation when suddenly the ceiling collapsed on top of them. The plaintiffs assert they were injured when the falling debris struck Ellis in the back and Thompson in the back and right arm. The plaintiffs claim they had previously reported a leak in ceiling, but a maintenance man who investigated the problem had said he could not repair it.

The defendant is accused of failing to maintain and repair the premises, strict liability and failing to do a proper inspection and prevent damage to the ceiling.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, emotional stress and strain.

Ellis and Thompson are represented by attorney Darleen M. Jacobs of New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division C Judge June Berry Darensburg.

Case no. 736-169.
