Motorcyclist suing Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office after deputy allegedly ran over his leg

GRETNA – A local law enforcement agency is being sued by a motorcyclist who claims a sheriff’s deputy followed him onto a grassy field and ran over his leg.

James Herring filed suit against Newell Normand, in his official capacity as Sheriff of Jefferson Parish, and Micah Blange in the 24th Judicial District Court on April 28.

Herring asserts that on Jan. 12 he drove his motorcycle off the end of Dickory Avenue in  Harahan into a grassy field and fell off onto the grass when a cruiser driven by Blange ran over his leg. The plaintiff claims he was seriously injured in the incident.

The defendant is accused of following too closely, failing to stop, failing to use caution under the circumstances, driving too fast, careless operation, failing to see what should have been seen and failing to maintain control of the vehicle.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, mental pain and suffering, impairment of psychological functioning, loss of enjoyment of life, medical expenses, lost wages, disability from working to earn and income, destruction of earning capacity and disability.

Herring is represented by Rodney Kelp Littlefield of New Orleans-based Littlefield Law LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division L Judge Donald A. Rowan Jr.
