GRETNA – A local hospital is being sued by a patient who was allegedly injured in a slip and fall near an ice machine.

Paul Parker filed suit against Jefferson Parish Hospital Service District No. 2, Parish of Jefferson, State of Louisiana, East Jefferson General Hospital and their insurer in the 24th Judicial District Court on June 11.

Parker alleges that on June 12, 2013 he slipped and fell in a puddle of water on the floor in front of a sink next to an ice machine in the dining room area of the hospital's acute ward. The plaintiff asserts the problem was long standing due to evidence such as water stains in the area. Parker contends that staff who saw him fall did not help him, but threw him a towel and told him to “clean it up himself.”

The defendant is accused of creating an unreasonably dangerous condition, contributing to a deteriorating condition, not constructing the floor in accordance with required engineering plans and designs, lacking adequate leak warnings and not maintaining the floor in accordance with required engineering and design plans.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, mental pain and suffering, medical expenses, embarrassment, public humiliation, disgrace, aggravation, annoyance, inconvenience, residual physical disability, impairment of function and loss of enjoyment of life.

Parker is represented by Richard H. Barker IV of the Law Office of Richard Hobbs Barker IV APLC.

The case has been assigned to Division F Judge Michael P. Mentz.

Case no. 739-356.
