GRETNA – A tenant in a commercial building that caught on fire is being sued by the property owner for alleged negligence that resulted in the fire starting.

State Farm Fire and Casualty Company filed suit against Lesly Martinez in the 24th Judicial District Court on June 20.

State Farm Fire and Casualty Company asserts Martinez was a tenant in a building located at 2307 Whitney Ave. in Gretna which also contained their customers Franchi Barber Shop and Beauty Salon, Silky Nail Salon and Irmalia’s Flowers & Gifts all of which were damaged in the blaze. The plaintiff contends Franchi Barber Shop and Beauty Salon received damages in the amount of $20,816.62, Silky Nail Salon received damages in the amount of $27,541 and Irmalia’s Flowers & Gifts received damages in the amount of $14,124.06. State Farm claims that Martinez should be held liable for all damages and deductibles because she is allegedly responsible for the fire.

The defendant is accused of property damage.

Damages in the amounts awarded under insurance contracts are sought by the plaintiff.

State Farm Fire and Casualty Company is represented by Blaine T. Aydell of Baton Rouge-based Hannah, Colvin & Pipes LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division E Judge John J. Molaison Jr.
