GRETNA – A motorist who claims she was injured after being in a pileup at a DWI checkpoint is suing both the driver who allegedly caused a collision with her car and the law enforcement agency responsible for the area.
Maggie Barber filed suit against John Pierre Wade, Go Auto Insurance and Honorable Newell Normand, in his official capacity as the sheriff of the Parish of Jefferson, in the 24th Judicial District Court.
Barber alleges she was driving on Highway 90 in Bridge City on Aug. 29, 2013 when she pulled over due to congestion caused by a DWI checkpoint operated by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. The plaintiff asserts that when she came to a stop a vehicle driven by Wade struck hers in the rear causing property damage to her car and severe personal injuries to her body.
The sheriff is accused of concealing a DWI checkpoint, causing traffic without proper police supervision, not communicating properly to the rank on the scene when the traffic began backing up and lack of lighting.
An unspecified amount in damages is sought for personal injury, medical expenses, pain and suffering, diminished quality of life and loss of income.

The case has been assigned to Division P Judge Lee V. Faulkner Jr.
