GRETNA – A former employee of an insurance broker is suing after she was allegedly fired for refusing to back date their client’s continuing health coverage notices she claims were being improperly handled.

Stephanie Chandler filed suit against Hub International Midwest Limited, Hub International Gulf South and Annette Dowdle in the 24th Judicial District Court on July 31.

Chandler alleges that on May 3, 2013, she began her employment with Hub International at their offices located at 3510 N. Causeway Blvd. in Metairie when she claims she realized they had not properly handled federal mandated Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) continuation health services provided to workers by their employer after they quit or cannot work.

The plaintiff asserts when she notified her supervisor, Dowdle, of the issue she was told to back date and send out the notices to the client’s former employees at a time when they could no longer use them. Chandler contends after she notified Dowdle that back dating the notices was illegal she was fired on Dec. 19, 2013.

The defendant is accused of violation of state law, retaliation, failing to supervise employees, solicitation and hostile work force.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for emotional pain and suffering, lost wages and attorneys fees.

Chandler is represented by Myles Steib of Metairie-based Gardner & Steib.

The case has been assigned to Division B Judge Cornelius E. Regan.
