Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy accused of running red light, injuring three in collision

Plaquemines parish sheriff’s office

GRETNA – The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office is being sued by a group of people who claim they were injured when a deputy ran a red light and collided with the vehicle they were in.

Man Mirfiq, Mustafa Farah and Rame Judeh filed suit against Sean Burbano, Lonnie J. Greco, Sheriff of Plaquemines Parish, and American Alternative Insurance Corporation in the 24th Judicial District Court on Feb. 18.

The plaintiffs allege that on Feb. 27, 2014 they were riding on Lapalco Boulevard in Marrero in a 2007 BMW 525 owned by Mirfiq when a 2014 Ford Taurus driven by Burbano and owned by the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office ran a red light and collided with them. Mirfiq, Farah and Judeh contend Burbano was acting in the scope of his employment with the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office when the incident occurred.

The plaintiffs assert they received severe personal injuries in the accident for which they have had to seek medical treatment.

The defendant is accused of running a red light, disregarding a traffic signal, failing to yield to the right of way, traveling at an excessive rate of speed and negligently colliding with Mirfiq’s vehicle.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, medical expenses, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, property damage and insurance deductible.

The plaintiffs are represented by Dean J. Favret of New Orleans-based Favret, Demarest, Russo & Lutkewitte.

The case has been assigned to Division J Judge Stephen C. Grefer.

Case no. 746-773.
