GRETNA – A customer who was celebrating her birthday at Copeland’s Cheesecake Bistro is suing the establishment claiming she was severely injured after slipping and falling on “grease and pasta” that had been left on the restaurant’s stairs.

Mary E. Williams filed suit against Copeland’s Cheesecake Bistro LLC and Markel Corporation in the 24th Judicial District Court on March 25.

Williams alleges on March 26, 2014 her husband took her out for her birthday dinner at Copeland’s Cheesecake Bistro located at 4517 Veteran’s Blvd. in Metairie. The plaintiff contends she began to descend a set of stairs to exit the defendant’s restaurant following the meal when she stepped on what was later determined to be grease and pasta and slipped and fell. Williams asserts she suffered serious injuries to her back, shoulder, ankle, foot and hip and has also since suffered from headaches, muscle spasms and pain.

The defendant is accused of failing to properly supervise the area, failing to maintain the steps in proper condition, failing to properly inspect the steps, failing to propeller maintain the premises, failing to comply with applicable laws and failing to exercise the required degree of care.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for medical expenses, lost wages, inconvenience, pain and suffering, embarrassment, mental anguish, loss of well-being and impairment of overall health.

Williams is represented by attorney Vernon P. Thomas of New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division E Judge John J. Molaison Jr.

Case no. 748-049.
