Oakwood Shopping Center sues after allegedly slipping, falling in water from leaky skylight

GRETNA – A shopping center is being sued by a woman who claims she was injured after slipping and falling on water leaking from a skylight in the commons area.

Margaret Michell filed suit against Oakwood Shopping Center LLC, Oakwood Shopping Center, The Millard Group Inc. and Jack Esker in the 24th Judicial District Court on June 25.

Michell asserts he was shopping at the Oakwood Shopping Center located at 197 Westbank Expressway when he slipped in water on the floor in the common area of the shopping center. The plaintiff claims the water was leaking from a skylight in the shopping center’s ceiling. Michell alleges she received injuries to her back, shoulder, hip strain, going strain and left knee and ankle strains.

The defendant is accused of failing to maintain the floors free and clear of spills and leaks, failing to do regular inspection of floors, failing to warn the public of hazards, failing to maintain the roof, failing to do regular inspections of the skylight and roof, failing to warn the public of the leak and failing to conduct regular inspection of the equipment.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for pain and suffering.

Michell is represented by attorney Patrick G. Kehoe of New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division J Judge Stephen C. Grefer.
