Paraplegic man accuses Jefferson Parish of disability discrimination

Wheelchair

NEW ORLEANS – A disabled Louisiana man says Lafreniere Park in Jefferson Parish is inaccessible to those who are disabled.

Thad Tatum filed a lawsuit Dec. 18 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against the Parish of Jefferson, as the political entity responsible for Lafreniere Park, alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

According to the complaint, during a Dec. 13 visit to Lafreniere Park, Tatum noticed there were numerous architectural barriers preventing him from navigating the park and fully utilizing the accommodations and programs offered. He had difficulty, the suit says, accessing various elements of the property because of non-compliant or non-existent accessible routes.

Tatum seeks damages, injunctive and declaratory relief, as well as reimbursement for litigation costs. He is represented by attorneys Andrew D. Bizer, Garret S. DeReus and Amanda K. Klevorn of The Bizer Law Firm in New Orleans.
