Passenger alleges he was injured in auto crash with police officer

GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish man is seeking damages following an incident in which he was allegedly caused personal injury in a car accident.

Hugo Caal Choc filed a suit against Raymundo Lopez and Safeway Insurance Co. of Louisiana in the 24th Judicial District Court on May 6.

According to the claim, Choc was a passenger in a vehicle operated by Lopez when the incident occurred. The suit states that on May 24, 2015, Lopez failed to stop at a red light, causing him to collide with a police officer's car that was at the intersection with its sirens activated. The suit also states that the plaintiff was caused injury due to the action of the defendant.

The defendant is accused of negligence through his failure to keep a proper lookout, failure to stop at a red light, failure to yield to the police officer and general recklessness.

The plaintiff is seeking an unspecified amount in damages. He is represented by Miguel A. Elias, Paula J. Ferreira, David S. Scalia, Rolando Padilla, Jahida L. Lewis, Meagan Smith and Sean M. Regan of the Law Offices of Miguel A. Elias in Kenner. The case has been assigned to Division K Judge Ellen Shirer Kovach.
