LAFAYETTE – An African-American Muslim alleges his former employer discriminated against him because of his race and religion.

David E. Peterson filed a complaint on May 25 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, Lafayette Division against Linear Controls Inc. alleging that the former employer violated the Civil Rights Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that he was constantly cursed at, yelled at and harassed by his white supervisors and co-workers about his race and religion during his employment. In August 2015, he claims he reported the conduct and mistreatment to the defendant’s human resources representative but nothing was done. He alleges he was forced to resign on Sept. 4, 2015, because of the discriminatory treatment.

The plaintiff holds Linear Controls Inc. responsible because the defendant's employees allegedly falsely accused him of sleeping on the job, denied his request to return to mainland due to a family illness emergency and laid him off from his employment and never called him to return back to work.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against the defendant for an award of back wages; compensatory damages, statutory, liquidated, exemplary and punitive damages; and such other monetary award as may be deemed appropriate in amounts to be determined at trial, but no less than $250,000; and such other further relief as may be just and equitable. He is represented by Daniel E. Broussard Jr. of Broussard, Halcomb & Vizzier in Alexandria.
