St. Mary Parish woman blames Colopast businesses for health problems

Law money 04

LAFAYETTE — A St. Mary Parish woman is suing a group of Coloplast businesses, alleging their negligence led to the plaintiff's health problems.

Lashanda Bridget filed a lawsuit June 3 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana against Coloplast Corp., Coloplast A/S, Coloplast Manufacturing US LLC and Porges SA, alleging design defect, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, negligence and violation of the Louisiana Product Liability Act.

According to the complaint, on July 9, 2015, Bridget was implanted with a Coloplast Pelvic Mesh during a surgical procedure. On March 4, 2016, the suit says, she was diagnosed with erosion of transobdurator mid-urethal sling, urgency of urination, enlarged lymph nodes, with approximately 2.5 centimeters of exposed sling noted at the superior distal aspect of the vagina.

The lawsuit states Bridget underwent surgical procedure for the removal of the Coloplast Pelvic Mesh and, as a result, she has suffered financial losses, lost wages and medical expenses.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants designed, manufactured, marketed, distributed and sold Coloplast Pelvic Mesh, a medical device used to repair weakened or damaged tissue. The suit says the defendants also failed to adequately test, research and evaluate the risks of using their product, concealed to the medical community the dangerous risks of using their product, withheld information about the propensity of their product and intentionally mislead the medical community and the public.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury, judgment of more than $75,000, compensatory damages, attorney fees, legal costs, interest and any other relief to which she is entitled. She is represented by attorneys Stephen C. Carleton, Victor R. Loraso, III and Carmen T. Herbert of Carleton Loraso & Hebert LLC in Baton Rouge.
