Mother accuses healthcare providers of medical malpractice

Medical malpractice 02

ALEXANDRIA — A Mississippi woman is suing a number of health care providers, alleging they caused harm to her son.

Barbara Jeane Gaines of Natchez, Mississippi, on behalf of her minor child TDG, filed a lawsuit June 10 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana Alexandria Division against Acadia Healthcare Company, Inc., Crossroads Regional Hospital LLC of Louisiana, doing business as Long Leaf Hospital, and Keith Newman, alleging assault, battery and negligence.

According to the complaint, on Aug. 23, 2015, Gaines' minor son was a mental health patient at Longleaf Hospital and was diagnosed with intermittent explosive disorder. On that same day, the suit says, TDG was involved in an altercation with another patient.

The lawsuit states hospital staff took TDG to his room, which is not monitored by security cameras. After being removed from his room, the complaint says, TDG was struck in his head and torso by Newman and another technician, causing him to sustain laceration to his nose and black eyes.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants negligently hired, trained and supervised their employees, failed to render proper and adequate mental health care and treatment and that Newman and another technician physically abused her minor child.

Gaines seeks a trial by jury, compensation for all damages, plus costs and any further relief the court determines necessary and appropriate. She is represented by attorney Brett L. Grayson of Lafayette.
