GRETNA – A woman is seeking damages over claims that the Kenner building that she was renting contained harmful mold.

Denise Abade filed a suit against Mary Elizabeth Bourgeois and Taft Park Building Corp. in the 24th Judicial District Court on July 19.

According to the claim, the defendant was the commercial real estate owner of the property located at 1623 Williams Blvd. The suit states that the plaintiff was leasing said property for her pet grooming business and that it had damages, such as leaking, which caused the plaintiff illness and fatigue.

The suit states that in June, Driskill Environmental Consultants did a microbial assessment of the property and determined it was filled with toxic mold and was not fit for use or habitation. Although the plaintiff made these concerns known to the owner, the defendant allegedly failed to take any action, despite the fact that the building was discovered to possess actual health risks to those inside.

The defendants are accused of negligence through failing to heed the requests of the plaintiff and failing to maintain the premises in a condition that was safe for humans and animals.

The plaintiff is seeking an unspecified amount in damages. She is represented by James F. Willeford and Regan L. Toledano of Willeford & Toledano in New Orleans. The case has been assigned to Division N Judge Stephen D. Enright Jr.
