SHREVEPORT -- A couple are suing the City of Shreveport for an alleged illegal weapon seizure.

Legary D. and Antonia Adams filed a complaint in July in Caddo Parish District Court against the City of Shreveport and Shreveport Police Department Officer Viscotti. The defendants have removed the case to federal court.

According to the complaint, on June 29, 2020, Legray was parked at Clear Horizon apartments, at which time, Officer Viscotti and other officers surrounded his vehicle. Officer Viscotti approached Adams asking about a shots-fired call and asked if Viscotti had a weapon on him, the suit claims.

Adams replied that he did have a weapon, and produced it for officers to see, at which time Officer Viscotti confiscated the firearm despite Adams have a license to carry, the suit says. Officer Viscotti then transported Adams to the Shreveport City Jail despite Adams protesting his innocence, the suit says.

Mrs. Adams came to the jail to protest her husband's innocence and was threatened with being jailed, she says. Mr. Adams was later released, but on July 10, 2020, his arrest photo ran in a local newspaper which led to a customer informing Adams' employer he had a felony record, which was false, and causing him to be terminated due to incorrect information being printed by the police, the suit claims.

Legary and Antonia Adams seek attorney's fees and cost of suit. Mr. Adams seeks for his record and erroneous outstanding felony conviction to be erased. The Adamses are represented by Nelson W. Cameron.
