Lawsuit alleges Reglan caused nervous system disorder

A Jefferson Parish resident is suing the manufacturer of a reflux medicine he says is to blame for his nervous system disorder.

Isreal Bennett filed suit against Qualitest Pharmaceuticals June 11 in federal court in New Orleans.

Bennett says he took the drug Reglan, as prescribed, to treat reflux from December 2008 through May 2009. He says he was later diagnosed with tardive dyskensia, a disorder that affects the nervous system and causes abnormal muscle movements.

Reglan is indicated for short-term therapy for nausea symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux and acute and recurrent diabetic gastroparesis. Bennett claims the drug causes serious, permanent and disabling injuries including injuries to the central nervous and extrapyramidal motor systems.

Bennett says the defendant disseminated inaccurate, misleading, incomplete, false and otherwise inadequate information concerning the effects of exposure and long-term exposure to Reglan. He claims the risks outweigh the benefits of the drug.

Bennett is seeking damages for medical expenses, physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, physical disfigurement, physical impairment, loss of earnings, loss of earning capacity, court costs and interest.

New Orleans attorneys Allan Berger and Andrew J. Geiger of Allan Berger & Associates are representing Bennett. Jury trial is requested.

U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance is assigned to the case.
