Cyndi Nguyen

A hearing on a motion filed by the Louisiana Board of Ethics (LBE) against a former New Orleans City Council candidate has been continued without date in Orleans Parish Civil District Court.

The LBE filed a motion requesting that former City Council candidate Cyndi Nguyen show why she should not be found guilty of violating Louisiana campaign finance laws when she ran for office in 2010.

Nguyen allegedly filled out a finance report which "lists a loan in the amount of $4,500 from Southern Premiere Development," the LBE claims.

Louisiana statutes state that candidates seeking district office positions are prohibited from receiving loans in excess of $2,500, LBE said.

Orleans Parish Judge Herbert Cade was originally scheduled to oversee a hearing on this matter March 11.

Nguyen could face a penalty of up to $5,000 or the amount of the violation, whichever is greater, if found guilty.

If it is determined that it was a "knowing and willful violation," Nguyen could face a penalty of $10,000 or twice the amount of the violation, whichever is greater.

Nguyen, a Democrat, lost her 2010 bid for New Orleans City Council's District E seat to Jon D. Johnson. District E represents the New Orleans East community.
