A New Orleans woman has filed a lawsuit against her landlord claiming he and his insurers are liable for injuries she sustained when a piece of "woodwork" in her apartment fell on her.

Kelda Fontenot is suing Terrell Hampton, Terrich Properties LLC, Scottsdale Insurance and Nationwide Insurance in Orleans Parish Civil District Court.

New Orleans attorneys Roderic Alvendia, J. Bart Kelly III and Jeanne Demarest filed the petition for damages May 10.

The suit claims Fontenot "sustained serious painful and progressive injuries to her entire body including head, neck and back" after she was "hit in the head by a falling piece of wood board."

The suit also claims that Fontenot's husband was and will be "caused to lose the society, services and consortium of his wife."

The defendants were negligent in failing to "repair a hazardous area for an unreasonably long period of time," failing to warn tenants of the dangers and other charges, the suit alleges.

The lawsuit does not specify how long the home was allegedly defective. The incident occurred in June 2010, according to the petition for damages.

Orleans Parish Judge Sidney Cates IV has been assigned this case.
