Seaman sues company after suffering head injury due to co-worker's alleged actions

Gordon

A New Orleans marine company is being sued by an employee who suffered a head injury allegedly due to a co-worker's actions.

Arguing his employer was negligent in training the crew, Hollis Pace filed suit against Weeks Marine Inc. on July 25 in federal court in New Orleans.

Pace states the incident occurred on May 13, as he was working on board the vessel Weeks 542. According to court documents, Pace and the crew were pumping out the scow by means of a pump when a co-employee loosened the middle rope causing the scow barge to shift outward. The discharge hose was forced out and hit Pace in the back of his head, knocking him to the deck. Pace was knocked unconscious in the event.

The defendant is accused of negligence for failing to properly train the crew regarding how the operation should have been conducted, for the co-employee's action of loosening the middle rope, for failing to stop the scow barge from drifting and for failing to warn Pace that the scow barge was shifting.

Pace is represented by Steven J. Gordon of Gordon, Elias & Seely in Houston. A jury trial is requested.

U.S. District Judge Lance M. Africk is assigned to the case.
