Worker sues owner of offshore platform for not placing non-skid surface on deck

After slipping and falling outside of his living quarters, a worker has filed a lawsuit against the owner of an offshore platform for failing to place non-skid or other slip prevention measurements on the deck of the platform.

Willie Woods filed suit against Apache Corp. and Stallion Offshore Quarters Inc. on Aug. 11 in federal court in New Orleans.

The accident occurred on Feb. 28, 2011, while Woods was working on an offshore platform owned by Apache, with the living quarters provided by defendant Stallion Offshore. Woods slipped on the deck outside of his living quarters and fell. He states he sustained a serious injury to his shoulder and had to undergo surgery.

The defendants are accused of negligence for failing to properly maintain the area outside of the living quarters which caused Woods to fall, failing to properly design and outfit the deck outside of the living quarters, including the lack of non-skid and other slip prevention measurements, for failing to properly warn Woods regarding the dangerous condition and for violation of maritime law in regard to the premises outside of the living quarters.

The plaintiff is seeking damages for physical, mental and emotional pain and suffering, loss of wages, fringe benefits, wage earning capacity, physical disability, medical expenses, punitive damages, interest and court costs.

Woods is represented by Timothy J. Young, Jason C. MacFetters and Rebecca A. Coman of The Young Firm in New Orleans. A jury trial is requested.

U.S. District Judge Eldon E. Fallon is assigned to the case.
