NEW ORLEANS - A St. Charles Parish seaman has filed a lawsuit against his employer claiming that the company's alleged negligence caused him to injure his back and fall into the Mississippi River.
Donavoin Dickerson filed suit against ADM Grain River System Inc. in personam and the M/V Louisiana Moon, her engine, tackle, etc. in rem. on April 11 in federal court in New Orleans.
The alleged incident occurred on Oct. 4, 2011 while Dickerson was employed by the defendant as a deckhand aboard the M/V Louisiana Moon.
Dickerson states that he injured his back and spine when he fell from a barge, struck a kevel and landed in the Mississippi River.
The plaintiff is asking the court for an award of more than $50,000 in damages, plus maintenance and cure, lost wages, attorney's fees, court costs, and interest.
Dickerson is represented by Metairie attorney Charles W. Dittmer Jr.
U.S. District Judge Lance M. Africk is assigned to the case.
