NEW ORLEANS - Hospital employee Anissa G. Allen filed suit against St. James Parish Hospital on June 22 in federal court in New Orleans claiming she was terminated for not hearing a page over the intercom.

Allen was employed at St. James Parish Hospital for nearly 17 years and was terminated in March 2011.

According to the complaint, Allen wears a hearing aid in her left ear, which the hospital was aware of at the time of employment.

The hospital is accused of terminating Allen in violation of the American with Disabilities Act and of committing racial discrimination against Allen.

The plaintiff is asking for an award of compensatory damages for damage to her reputation, loss of income, emotional distress, mental anguish, humiliation, pain and suffering, punitive damages, costs, interest, and attorney's fees. A jury trial is requested.

Allen is represented by Travis J. Turner and Keyojuan G. Turner of Turner Law Firm in Gonzales.
