Amputation of oil rigger's fingers leads to lawsuit against local company

NEW ORLEANS – A rigger filed suit against a local oil and gas field company for injuries he claims led to the amputation of three of his fingers.

John Guillory filed a lawsuit against Newpark Resources Inc. in the Orleans Parish Central District Court on Aug. 9. Guillory claims that while rigging and hooking straps around tanks to be lifted by a crane from a flatbed truck, a crane operator employed by the defendant swung the crane's cable block twice in the direction of the plaintiff leading to his hand being sucked into the crane's cable pulley and mangling his pinky, ring and middle fingers. The plaintiff alleges that the defendant's negligence led to the full amputation of all three fingers injured on his left hand.

The defendant is accused of operating the crane recklessly and carelessly, failing to have a guard on the pulley to prevent the plaintiff from hand injury and failing to see what he should have seen.

An unspecified amount is sought for personal injuries, medical bills and expenses, physical and mental pain and suffering and loss of all earnings and earning capacity.

The plaintiff is represented by Sean P. Early of Klotz & Early.

This case has been assigned to Division D Judge Lloyd J. Medley.

Case no. 2012-07840.
